A B O U T U S
Galleri Majkens was founded by the visual artist Magdalena Blom and opened in June 2017. It was situated for a year at Tegelbruksvägen 2 in Midsommarkransen, just south of Stockholm.
In August 2018 Galleri Majkens became a nomadic pop-up gallery and is since then a non-profit organisation run by a feminist board. A selected group of artists, art historians, curators and cultural researchers working together to create feminist-themed exhibitions, workshops, seminars in various places in Stockholm. The first place we will inhabit as a collective is ABF´s gallery space at Sveavägen 41 in Stockholm city.

The show room in Midsommarkransen we started with was about 35 m2 and had unique architectural features we based our gallery-logo on.
We are always looking for new spaces to show our upcoming exhibitions and events in. Any suggestions are greatly welcome, don't hesitate to share your ideas concerning interesting collaborations with us!
M A N I F E S T O
Galleri Majkens focuses on discovering new, exciting contemporary art. By the promising 'up-and-comings' and also more established artists, from both the Nordic- and the International art scene.
We are working from a feminist perspective, making equality our main goal. By taking this stance, we want to be part of art history being written today. Working to create an equal art world where female-, or non-binary artists can achieve the same kind of representation as their male colleagues, thus sharing the public space equally.
By giving preference to female-, and non-binary artists we want to counteract the current unequal cultural climate. By doing so, the gallery wishes to discover, nurture and create new strong feminist role models for the contemporary art world of today.
We often get the question: who is Majken?
The name originates from the place we started at. The owner of that café in Midsommarkransen created an acronym of her family member´s first names, which resulted in M A J K (E N). So we chose to stick with that soft-sounding female name to lay the foundation for this feminist gallery. So we made the name part of our fight for equality, adding some female representation to the gallery scene.
In gallery names, in the process of decisionmaking; as gallery directors, curators, and artists there are so many Majkens out there who need to be heard, need to be visible and need to pocess power to keep counteract this ongoing patriarchy.
The "s" after "Majken" ought to be seen as (eventhough it's without the aphostrophe) as a possessive one symbolising the struggle to gain and withhold that power as a woman artist.
